Background of the Study
Political activism among university students has been a critical aspect of political movements globally. In Nigeria, the role of students, particularly female students, in political activism has gained increasing attention, given the socio-political dynamics that often marginalize women in the political sphere. Female university students in Jos North, Plateau State, have been actively involved in social movements and political activism, addressing issues such as gender inequality, human rights, and electoral justice. Despite the challenges they face, including cultural biases and socio-political barriers, these students have used their platforms to advocate for change within their communities and the broader national context (Akpan & Bassey, 2024).
Jos North, being a major educational hub in Plateau State, hosts several universities that contribute to the intellectual and political engagement of young women. Female students from these institutions have become prominent in political activism, participating in protests, organizing forums, and engaging with local and national political leaders. However, the extent and impact of their activism in promoting gender equality and political inclusion remain underexplored. This study seeks to investigate the role of female university students in political activism within Jos North, analyzing the factors that motivate their involvement, the challenges they face, and the impact of their activism on local governance and gender equality.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While political activism is crucial for democratic development, women’s involvement in such activities often faces greater barriers compared to their male counterparts. In Jos North, although female university students have been increasingly involved in political activism, their efforts are frequently hindered by gender stereotypes, institutional biases, and limited access to political networks (Joseph & Ibrahim, 2023). The lack of comprehensive research on the subject means that the specific roles and challenges of female university students in political activism remain poorly understood. This study aims to address this gap by exploring how female university students in Jos North engage in political activism and the obstacles they encounter along the way.
